Overcoming Creative Block with Music

Girl listening to music

When creative block has me in a real funk, it seems like no matter what, I’m just going to have to suffer. Art block, writers block, or whatever creative block can come at the worst possible times. There are many ways you can get over your creative blockage like taking a walk, exercising, or surfing the web, but the best method for me is listening to music.

Background Noise with Energy and Mood

I tend to work best with some kind of background noise (not like a screaming baby or anything, but a nice sounding melody). I usually like to have something with a little beat to it. The beat helps the work flow more smoothly! So, background noise is a must, for me.

Music gives you energy! With the right kind of music, it can give you the right kind of mind set. You don’t want something that makes you sleepy, but you also don’t want something that gives you so much energy that you feel like getting up and doing "the funky chicken" either. For me, something smooth with a predictable beat would be best, but stick to whatever puts you in your “I’m working” mind set.

As an artist I often find it difficult to portray certain moods in my work. So to help me focus on one, I frequently listen to something that makes me feel what the mood of my piece is intended to be. If something is supposed to be dark and frightening, I might listen to a soundtrack from a scary movie. If my work is supposed to be happy and cheerful, then I’ll listen to something up beat with a faster pace. Songs that fit moods are very helpful with creative block!

So no matter what type of "block" you’re experiencing, music is one of the best ways that I know of to get over it. Since music gives you a background noise, it can give you the right kind of energy, and help you to focus on specific moods. Just make sure the music you listen to is something you like, and something you’re able to work with.
