The need for project control

Working on our content management system, I've found that our lack of some much needed project control guidelines has turned this thing into more of a monster than I originally intended. It's not all bad either, but it has pushed back our final product release date.

Originally, it wasn't supposed to include a couple of the features I started wanting. Just like the over excited design client who has new ideas for your work in progress, I started writing them down for consideration. Now, what I should have done is followed the original scope of the project, just as we would do with any design client. The downside to it is that I'm the design client and the designer, so telling myself no didn't really work out.

I've found out that it will benefit the CMS but at the same time it's taking away from the speedy release of both it and our site. While I'm writing this, I've yet to complete a couple pages of copy on Asheboro Creative, and have ignored a lot of my to-do list to work long late night hours on this. I know that in the end, it will pay off but at the same time I see the negative side effects of it.

Putting controls in place to keep your projects from overflowing into madness is necessary, even if it's for your own personal work. It's not a good idea to let it avalache into twenty dozen features you never intended in the first place. Building to be adaptable will make it able to handle changes later, when you can plan everything against the time you have to spend on it.
